The Lego Movie 2 The Second Part

With the original Lego Movie and Lego Batman being huge hits and two movies I really enjoyed, I was on board when I first saw a trailer for this movie and I was not disappointed.
This movie delivered on so many different levels. I walked out of the theater with a huge smile on my face, highly entertained and extremely satisfied with what I had just watched. I just kept repeating “that was so good”.
The comedy in this movie just lands for me every single time. Through out the movie there are jokes that you know are intended for laughs, most likely from the kids going to watch this, and then there are the subtle jokes, something a character just says in passing or a pop culture reference that are most likely in there for the older audience. One of the jokes that got me was one of those lines a character says in passing. One of them says something about how they are listening to music to loud with no concern for the damage to their longterm hearing. I know most wouldn’t find that funny but I’m an audio nerd and it just got me. The comedy shows the makers of this movie really knew who they were making this movie for.
Just like in the original, I loved these characters. I think this movie is a perfect demonstration that you don’t have to give us super complex characters just characters that we can care about. I cared about these characters because the movie shows us how they care for each other in the movie. All of the actions and decisions these characters make are based on their relationships with those around them. It is such a simple idea but it works.
What I think I loved about this movie the most though was its uniqueness. Now, yes, it has the tone and comedy styles of the first Lego Movie. However, I think this movie stands on its own very well. If you take away the first couple of minutes that tie the original movie and this one together it could be its own separate movie completely. Sometimes when there is a sequel, the studios make a movie that is almost identical to the first movie and afterward I’m left wondering what was the point of the sequel when I could just have easily rewatched the first. That is not the case with this movie.
This movie played in the same “universe” of the first movie where most of the movie is taking place in the lego imagination world and some parts in reality. This movie gave us a little more in reality than the first because they are now assuming we understand the world they have set up with the first movie. The uniqueness of this style really serves the meaning that is behind the story. In first movie, the uniqueness was used to hammer home the idea of stretching your imagination and being creative. In this movie, the uniqueness is now being used to serve the idea of getting along with one another and working/playing together (especially in a family context). The fact that this “kids” movie (lets be real it’s not just for kids) can have such a deep meaning and they use this world they have so brilliantly created to serve that meaning is just so cool to me.
Overall this movie is a great time at the theater. I am so glad I had the chance to see this one on the big screen. The only warning I will give is the music is very catching and the songs may get stuck in your head but what else can I say except
