Another movie that got me from the trailer. It peaked my interest. Props must be given to that marketing team because they did their job on selling me on going to see this one.
To start off, this movie looked nice. It gave space this neat look with the contrast of colors and such.
This movie I think had some great potential. I liked the setting of a not so far off future, I like the idea of space travel and the commercialization of it. There were some shots that looked like their tribute to 2001: A Space Odyssey. The foundation for a movie I would enjoy are all there.
However overall I did not care for this movie.
The movie was extremely slow. So many of the scenes dragged on for too long. From start to finish this movie could have easily been accomplished in about an hour.
There are a lot of unnecessary scenes. Scenes that could have been tied in to other parts of the story or just completely left out. For instance there is a scene while they are on the moon traveling from one space port to another. In the middle of the transfer Brad Pitt and crew are attacked by space pirates. Everyone is killed except Brad Pitt and the guy he originally started traveling with. They make it to the next space port and Brad Pitt goes on his way and space pirates are never mentioned again or have any thing to do with the movie.
The dialogue and narration of the movie was also boring and dry. Brad Pitt barely shows any emotion during the movie, and yes I get that is part of the character he was playing but it doesn't make it not boring.
There were a lot of wasted cast members here like Tommy Lee Jones, Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland, Ruth Negga. They all have nothing to do in the movie. These great actors are all wasted. They could have been replaced by not so famous people and no one would have thought a thing about it.
The story was predictable which didn't help a movie I was already finding boring. If I can predict where the story is going and then it does go there I feel like I'm wasting my time. The movie was a little over 2 hours but it felt so much longer than that.
Overall I was not impressed with this movie. It was so underwhelming compared to what I thought the movie would be in the trailer. If I did not have AMC A-List I would have regretted seeing this one in theaters. I would give a word of caution if this were a movie you were walking in to blindly. But if this is something you really want to see, go see it for yourself and make your own opinion.
